I turn on the news or read CNN and I can't believe my eyes or my ears. The whole Casey Anthony thing has me so angry. Every so often one of these sociopathic mothers kills her children because they kids are getting in the way of something she wants. Usually the reason is a man, who doesn't want kids.
Same thing happened with Diane Downs who shot her three children and blamed it on a shaggy haired stranger, and Susan Smith, who blamed her children's disappearance on a black man who carjacked her and took her kids. She'd actually pushed her car, with her two little boys in the back seat, into a lake and watched them sink into the water.
I'd written about 90 pages of a book dealing with this very same thing, but abandoned it because it was so emotionally draining for me. I may pick up where I left off at some point, but for now it'll stay filed away on the laptop.
As a human being I'm outraged and disgusted at parents like this. As a mother, I'm astonished and outraged. It's human nature to want to protect children. It's instinct for a parent to do anything to keep their kids safe. What has happened to a parent who would kill their own children. I find it especially unbelievable that a mother would intentionally cause any harm to her children, never mind actually looking them in their little faces and murdering them.
How does that happen?
No matter how many studies I'd read on the topic, I'll never quite get it. It's so alien to me. My heart breaks for these babies who never really had a chance.

If I hadn't already written a book that touches on this, I might be tempted to. This particular case is infuriating, but even more than usual because a lot of people have put serious money behind the mother to pay for her defense. They even had Kathy Reichs consulting and appearing on CNN.
Ugh, it's disgusting, isn't it, Sandra? It really makes me feel sick.
I don't understand how it is that she has so many people buying her crap. I'm certain that part of it is that people just can't fathom that a mother would kill her child.
I missed this particular story, being on the wrong side of the pond, but it's all too familiar. Some people just don't seem to view children as objects of love to be protected and nurtured, but as possessions, to be discarded when they become more effort than necessary.
You only have to see the case of Shannon Matthews over here, where her mother has had seven children by five different men, simply so that she can collect benefits and not have to work for a living, to see how this attitude can grow. At least in that case the child was only drugged and held captive for a while, (though I can't imagine what psychological damage that will leave her with), but seeing the mother on the news, such a consummate liar, was chilling.
Oh that's awful, James. And there are also those who take in foster children just for the cash. It's so infuriating.
